The World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH)
The World Federation for Mental Health was founded in London in 1948 to advance, among all peoples and nations, the prevention of mental and emotional disorders, the proper treatment and care of those with such disorders, and the promotion of mental health. The mission of the World Federation for Mental Health is to promote, among all peoples and nations, the highest possible level of mental health in its broadest biological, medical, educational, and social aspects.
The Federation’s organizational and individual membership includes mental health workers of all disciplines, consumers/users of mental health services, family members and concerned citizens. It is accredited in consultative status to the United Nations and its specialized agencies (such as the U.N. Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization, the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, the U.N. Commission on Human Rights, and the International Social Science Council) and works closely with the World Health Organization.
Throughout its history, the Federation has been active in advancing the concerns of people with mental illness before international forums, both private and governmental, and in supporting the efforts of its member organizations at the national and regional level.

Biennial World Congresses
One of the major activities of the WFMH is to hold Biennial World Congresses in different regions to bring together the Federation’s international members with local mental health workers, educators, consumers, carers and professionals to look into the education, scientific and technological knowledge, examples of good practice and fellowship in mental health. These Congresses highlight the trends in mental health issues and raise awareness with governments and leaders in the regions.
The World Congresses are held in different cities and countries. The last (28th) Congress was held in Cairo, Egypt in 2005.
The 2007 World Congress is hosted by New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association, The Mental Health Association of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong College of Psychiatrists and The World Federation for Mental Health, with the full support from the Commissioner for Rehabilitation of the Hong Kong SAR Government.
